Vision is a glorious thing to behold. What a priceless gift. To have a vision for your life, your job, family, organization, community, etc. means to be in possession of a blueprint. But where exactly does this blue print come from?
The literal definition of vision (according to google) is: 1) The faculty or state of being able to see. 2) the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom. Wouldn't that be great to have? The ability to "see?" or "plan the future with...wisdom?" When you have vision, you aren't stumbling around in the dark. You aren't in a constant state of guessing and wondering if you are on the right path. Vision is invaluable because it is a conduit for clarity. Where vision is present, indecisiveness and uncertainty is devoid. Vision is a powerful thing. It is a quality every great leader has. It enables them to carve out a path in the middle of the unknown. But, again, where does vision come from? And what do you do, if you don't have one?
In Ps 32:8, "The LORD says, 'I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.'" I really like this verse simply because it takes all the pressure off of those who trust in Jesus Christ. In Ps 32:8, God is yelling out, "TRUST ME!!!" Sometimes, you and I simply do not know what to do! But here is the good news, God always does. You can trust that and believe it. God is a faithful God and He will never lie. For a while, I had a vision for my life but then everything seemed to turn upside down. I didn't know what to do, and I felt quite lost. But as I began to pray and spend time listening to God, I began to realize something...not knowing is actually okay! As believers, you and I don't have to have every detail of our lives figured out. Leave that to Jesus! Jeremiah 29:11 says, "I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for." You see? God has a plan. He has every moment of our lives figured out. God has the vision. Therefore, we don't have to spend every waking moment banging our heads against the wall trying to figure life out. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don't try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God's voice in everything you do, everywhere you go. He's the One who will keep you on track." Many, many times, I've tried to be in control, but it took Christ shaking things up a bit in my life to see that I'm actually not. He is. For a while this felt pretty uncomfortable, but then I realized that with such a trustworthy God being in control, I can sit back and rest.
I don't need to stress. There is no need to worry. I'm in good hands! Today, I listened to a sermon by Pastor Steven Furtick called "Focus on the Fruit." (Thanks for the suggestion mom!) In the sermon, Pastor Furtick said that it's okay to not know. And you know what? He's right! It is okay. Actually, it's more than okay. It's the perfect spot to be in because everything is on God! He is controlling the outcome and all the moving parts of the situation. So, if right now you are feeling uncertain about your future, I have GREAT news for you: Everything will be just fine. Simply, rest. I know resting feels uncomfortable, especially if there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding you, but today I want to encourage you to simply trust God. He will see you through. Remember, whatever you are facing needed God's permission before it ever came to you. Nothing takes God off guard.
Let me leave you with this thought. Gen 3:8 says, "When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the LORD God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the LORD God among the trees." I emphasized the word "walking" in this verse because it highlights God's calm reaction to Adam and Eve's disobedience. Even though God knew what He would have to do (i.e. send His only Son Jesus Christ to be crucified on the cross), He still what? Screamed like His hair was on fire? Cried in a corner because He didn't know what to do? Fell over like a fainting goat? No! He walked. In other words, God is always cool, calm, and collected because He always has a plan. God always has a way out. God knows what He is doing, even when we don't know what to do. Even when we don't see the future with clarity, He does.
Trust God today and watch His beautiful vision for your life unfold.
